Mom First Human Second is home to my experiences and inner workings. In time, I hope it will hold the stories and truths of many mothers and women.
about amber
I was born and raised in Wyoming. From the time I was little, I tried to uproot my family. "There is this place called California. It's warm and they have an ocean." Needless to say, my attempts failed and I had to wait until college to break free. So where does one go after years of plotting? Missouri. Let that sink in a minute. I met lifelong friends while attending Stephens College (an all women's school) and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts, which I lovingly refer to as my degree in pretend. From there, I had a brief stint as a nanny for the stars in Los Angeles. I moved eight months later when I fell head over heels for New York City. So many wonderful moments were sponsored by the Big Apple. I was able to dance/act my heart out with the Treehouse Shakers. I flew to farms in the US and England and drew mazes in their cornfields as sweat dripped from every part of my body and I cursed the heavens. I found the cheapest rent in the city which happened to be run by nuns. I journeyed to Vietnam where I helped to film a documentary and lost my heart to orphans. I met my husband and absolute love of my life. We adopted a French Bulldog and found every dog friendly spot in the city. I became a labor doula and supported women as they welcomed their babies into the world. I married my love and got pregnant one month later. I thought I would live my entire life in the city, but one dream of a farmhouse with a garden, barn, and trees changed everything. We moved out of the city two months before my daughter was born in our dining room. She is the light and joy of my life. She also delights in taking on the role of tiny dictator and guides most of my days and all of my life's decisions.
